BRENDAN McCartney lamented a lack of defensive pressure from his players as the Western Bulldogs were brought back to earth with a 28-point loss to Fremantle at Etihad Stadium.
McCartney said in many respects the Dogs had taken "another really good step in the right direction'' after last week's convincing win over the Brisbane Lions, but said ultimately his side was undone by a team who defended a lot better.
"They (Fremantle) value the part of the game when you haven't got the ball,'' McCartney said.

"It's a part of the game that stacks up well when it really matters because you can't always have the game on your terms at AFL level.
"Sometimes you get beaten around the ball, sometimes you miss goals instead of kicking them and when you're going through those patches you've got to keep defending and that's what they do really well.''
The Dockers flexed their muscle with a six goal to one first term that left the majority of the 19,210 crowd deflated.

McCartney said Fremantle's bigger bodies around the contest told, particularly early, and said there were plenty of elements of the Dockers' pressure game that he would like to see from his own team.
"We're building our own way of doing things, but there are certain things in the game that do stand up well,'' he said.
"We believe we're a fair way further down the path in those areas than people gave us credit for, but today was another reminder that we've got to keep progressing really quickly.
"Not as a whole group, in some instances it's one or two players and often they may be just not experienced in the game. They get a strong reminder that when they don't do that it has an effect on the team.''
The Dockers did not allow the Dogs the time and space that the Lions did last week and as such the home team's kicking efficiency suffered.
"We made a few errors that stood out during the course of the game,'' McCartney said.
"It was a day that it seemed whenever we made one of those it hurt us back the other way. We weren't as efficient with the ball, because of a combination of factors.''
The Bulldogs play Richmond next Sunday.
McCartney said captain Matthew Boyd would be "close'' to returning after two weeks out with a calf injury.
